Sketching the daily life of villagers in the Fayyūm.

In my PhD project, I aim to reconstruct the social history of rural society in the Fayyūm, Egypt, from the 9th to the 11th century. Working with the collection of Arabic papyri from the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection in Berlin, I apply a network analysis approach to identify document clusters among unpublished documents. The clusters can be linked to certain villages and their inhabitants, and thereby give us a glimpse into (among others) the daily lives of the villagers, the village structure, and the process of taxation in early Islamic rural Egypt.
