Background

Luisa Meyer is a graduate student of Middle Eastern Studies at the American University of Beirut and a freelance journalist. She holds a Bachelor degree of political science from the Freie Universität Berlin. Her research interests are migration, religion, and political and anthropological theory.

Research project

In her project, she explores the following question: “Where do faith-based humanitarian organizations draw the boundary between religious principles and the principle of neutrality in their every-day work?”. The research is based on ethnographic interviews and observations of international Christian faith-based organizations which provide humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The hypothesis is that these faith-based organizations use religious discourse as a resource for fundraising in the home country, but mainly disclose their religious background in their daily work to adhere to public funding regulations and to avoid sectarian conflict.
