Background

Barbara is a Postgraduate student at the University of Sussex in Conflict, Security and Development. She completed two Bachelor degrees in Germany, first in Political and Social Studies at the Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg and second in Near and Middle Eastern Studies with a minor in law focusing on International Humanitarian Rights at LMU. For her second degree, her research topic focused on the female body within a social and political fabric. She also taught German as a Foreign Language for Syrian refugees. Her main interest and research have been addressing gender, migration as well as Postcolonialism.

Research project

Barbara’s current research intends to analyse the gendered nature of migration. The focus will be on displaced Syrian women migrating to Germany. Looking at constructed identities of female refugees, she will challenge the victimization in the daily lives of these women. The understanding of gender, race, and class plays an important role. By applying the concept of intersectionality, she intends to discuss the everyday impacts and policy implications of deep-rooted intersectional inequalities.
