Indigenous Medicine from Aintab: Hripsime Topdjian's Notebook

Vortrag von Dr. Talin Suciyan (LMU München) in der 4MZ-Reihe "Kulturen des Islam: Aktuelle Forschung"

10.05.2022

Wann? Dienstag, 10.05.2022, 18:15 Uhr

Wo? Hörsaal M014 im Hauptgebäude der LMU, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1

In this presentation Talin Suciyan will discuss a manuscript of medical remedies written by Hripsime Topdjian from Aintab as a modern record of Armenian indigenous medicine. Topdjian composed the Armeno-Turkish lettered document in 1940 while she was living in exile in Cordoba, Argentina. Consisting of over 300 remedies with precise measurements, Topdjian’s notebook gives us insights into the materials used to treat the most common illnesses of her time and of the vast herbal knowledge which she had gathered in her hometown Aintab. While talking about Topdjian’s manuscript, Suciyan will give glimpses into the history of Armenian indigenous medicine, its practitioners and its interactions with other medical traditions. Some of these sources originate from the medieaval capital of Ani, Cilicia, and from famous Armenian medical practitioners like Amirdovlat Amasyatsi (Amirdovlat of Amasya).
