Duties included:

  • Covering two challenging geopolitical hotspots: South Asia – home to a quarter of the world’s population and the Middle East, a perpetually volatile region.
  • Covering more than a dozen countries, writing and broadcasting about current affairs, features, religion, economy of two vast and diverse regions.
  • Setting the day’s news agenda, with original ideas for headline stories, despatches and features. Write and present voice pieces and take part in instantaneous 2-ways on radio and TV on breaking stories.
  • Delivering short and long term socio-political prospects.
  • Writing for broadcast and then adapting for the websites: BBC online and BBC Live Page.
  • Work closely with news desk, planning team, relevant language services to source stories from south to central Asia, often veering off to south east Asia to cover Myanmar and Bangladesh-Rohingya issue.
  • Coverage of the Middle East includes Iran, interviews and articles post Mahsa Amini.
  • Liaising with duty editors, studio managers, correspondents, producers—to ensure an accurate, timely, and balanced output and consistency across the entire World Service output.

Covering the latest polls and revolutionary trends in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives in podcasts for BBC World Service, BBC Sounds, BBC World TV and in BBC Online articles.

Presenter/Producer: Heart and Soul, BBC Religion, 2016—2021
Half hour podcasts on religion, broadcast and downloaded onto BBC Sounds accompanied by Online articles. In this role I’ve worked in New York, Jerusalem, the occupied Palestinian territory and also in the UK.

Assignment: “Bangladesh’s Hidden Shame”, and an independent film: "Shame"
Investigative documentary on the persecution of indigenous Buddhists in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, south east Bangladesh. The BBC sent me as an undercover reporter as outsiders are not allowed into the militarised zone. “Shame” was screened worldwide including in Paris Ethnographic film festival.

Assignment, Documentary podcast: Women in Love in Bangladesh, and film: BBC Our World
First public gay marriage in Bangladesh. A nuanced story of an inter-faith relationship between two women in a conservative Muslim-majority country. Online article, translated by major BBC language services to audiences of millions. Featured on the BBC 100 Women site.

South Asia Editor and Senior Broadcast Journalist, BBC WS, Bush House, London: 1999-2005
Managed a small group of broadcast journalists assigned to write regional stories for a world audience. Liaised between the newsroom and South Asian language services in the bureaux in Delhi, Islamabad, Dhaka and Colombo.

BBC WS Global Business Report, Bush House, London: 1997-1999
Travelled to India’s business capital Mumbai to report on the controversial lawsuit between the energy company Enron Corp. and Maharashtra government. Reported also from the Philippines on how Spain’s San Miguel became the largest selling beer in Asia.

BBC World Service, DW and RFI, based in Rabat, Morocco, 1998-1999
Reported on current affairs and culture including a documentary podcast, “Morocco’s Disappeared” for BBC Assignment, and a series on “Arab Jews” for BBC One Planet.

Jerusalem: 2005-2012: My award-winning hour length films were shown on Israel’s Channel One, Brussels TV, Swedish TV, Jewish Film Channel, Docaviv, Warsaw Jewish Motifs Film Festival among other broadcasters and festivals.

Land for the Nomads, 2012: A lone Israeli's mission to secure land for the Jahalin Bedouins whose traditional lives in the Judean desert are under constant threat by ever-encroaching Israeli settlements. Premiered in Taiwan Ethnographic film festival.
Deadly Honour, 2009, Channel One, Arutz Echad, Israeli public TV: Documentary on a Bedouin family in central Israel where 9 girls were killed in 7 years between 2000 and 2007. Reviewed in Jerusalem Post, Haaretz, Ynet, and other newspapers; shown on European and US TV networks, and in festivals including Docaviv 2010. Awards include Prix CMCA, Marseilles, 2010.
