Over the course of the first millennium AD, scholars writing in Syriac developed a sophisticated tradition of learning and translation in the Middle East. In his talk Jack Tannous will seek to give a history of the development of the various scholarly traditions in Syriac and will ask the question of what, if anything, about the Syriac scholarly tradition was unique.
