VEVIAN ZAKI, M.A., Th.M. : The Story of the Arabic Bible: Translating the Pauline Epistles

23.05.2017 um 19:00 Uhr

The Christian communities in the Middle East translated the Bible from their original languages; Greek, Syriac, Coptic, and Latin into Arabic. This was inevitable after the rise of Islam and the Arabicization of both the daily life and official language of the Middle Eastern communities. This paper unfolds part of the story of the Arabic Bible, focusing only on the Arabic versions of the epistles of Paul. The extant manuscripts of the Arabic Pauline Epistles exceed 240 manuscripts that represent ca. 15 versions. This paper pays more attention to the earliest versions of the Arabic Pauline Epistles and how they were translated. It investigates also the versions quoted in the Muslim polemical works, and those versions which found their way to be printed in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Der Vortrag findet im Hörsaal M 014 Universitätshauptgebäude Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, statt.
