Second Arabic Papyrology Workshop

A Practical Guide to Genres of Arabic Documents (Cambridge 16.–17. 06. 2020)

16.06.2020 – 17.06.2020

We are happy to announce the second Arabic Papyrology Workshop A Practical Guide to Genres of Arabic Documents organized by the Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies of the LMU Munich in cooperation with the University of Cambridge. The workshop will be held at Cambridge University Library, 16th–17th June 2020.
Advanced Bachelor, Master and early Ph.D. students in Arabic and Judeo-Arabic Studies are encouraged to participate. Students from neighboring fields are welcome to apply, provided that they possess solid knowledge of Classical Arabic. Previous experience with reading and editing Arabic texts is not required. TEI knowledge is highly desired, but not compulsory.

The workshop will be centered around new approaches to the analysis of unedited Arabic documents. The program will combine introductory seminars on the history of the field, current projects, digital and paper resources as well as reading and editing techniques with hands-on sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the typological analysis and digital tools developed in the framework of the Arabic Papyrology Project by working on selected unpublished documents from the Michaelides Collection. A group of experts from the Munich research team will be the main instructors.

Participants will be selected among students of both organizing institutions as well as from other universities through an application process. Travel and accommodation can be subsidised (depending on funding).
Following the workshop, participants are welcomed to attend the Fourth Workshop on the Text and Layout Structure of Arabic Papyrus, Parchment and Paper Documents (7th–16th Centuries) at Cambridge University Library, 18th–20th June 2020. Accommodation costs of the conference, however, cannot be covered.

Classes will be taught in English. Applications should contain a motivation letter and curriculum vitae and should be submitted by email to michail.hradek@lmu.de or E.Garosi@campus.lmu.de before March 31st 2020.
Looking forward to welcome you in Cambridge,
