Prof. Dr. Scott Redford (Koç University, Istanbul)
The Ideal and the Real: City and Citadel Walls of the Anatolian Seljuks in the early 13th century

In two short decades, between the years of 1215 and 1230, the Anatolian Seljuks built or restored the city and citadel walls of almostcall of their cities. This talk will focus on the decorative and epigraphic programmes of 4 of these cities: Sinop, Antalya, Konya, and Alanya. Here, the Anatolian Seljuk state commissioned architectural, sculptural, and epigraphic works that reflected both the ideology and aspirations of the state as well as its accommodation of local and international developments of the time. These include the reaction to the aftermath of the 4th Crusade, as well as the changes in the order of the Seljuk ruling elite.
