The Sultan in the Public Space:  Mahmud II and the Image of Reform in the Ottoman Empire

PROF. DR. GÜNSEL RENDA (ISTANBUL)

Mahmud II was a great reformist institutionalizing the Ottoman westernization. He reformed the governmental institutions, established a new army and set regulations for a European type of uniform of tunics, trousers, and fez to replace caftans and turbans. To extend this clothing reform to the public he commissioned his own portraits in the new attire as portrait medals to decorate officials and foreign ambassadors and also as large-sized oil portraits in the European manner to be hung on the walls of government offices.  In spite of political oppositions to his official use of portraits, he was able to propagate this new image of the reforming sultan.

Der Vortrag findet Dienstag um 19 Uhr c.t. im Hörsaal M 014 (Universitätshauptgebäude, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1) statt.
