Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910): Art and Archaeology in a Dying Empire

Prof. Dr. Edhem Eldem (Bogazici University / Fellow am Wissenschaftkolleg, Berlin)

21.05.2012 um 19:00 Uhr

Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) is well known as the “founding father” of Ottoman archaeology and museology, but also as an artistic figure closely linked to Ottoman westernization in the second half of the nineteenth century. The lecture will attempt to combine these two dimensions in order to draw a portrait of a man whose life and career embody to a large extent the complexity and the ambiguities of the Ottoman Empire during the last decades of its existence.
