This lecture will explore notions of the sacred and secular against the backdrop of Muslim-Jewish-Christian relations in the pre-modern and modern Middle East. Drawing upon Muslim, Jewish and Christian autobiographical and historical works it argues that the city defined the nature of Muslim-Jewish-Christian relations and that sacred and secular elements which historically have formed an essential part of interfaith relations have always existed in the Islamic and Middle Eastern city, sometimes in an uneasy relationship with each other.
