Dr. Khatchig Mouradian (Columbia University, New York) : A Tale of Two Midwives: The Notebooks of Siphora and Nuritza Shnorhokian of Aintab

17.05.2017

For more than half a century, two Armenian sisters, Siphora and Nuritsa Shnorhokian, served as midwives first in Ottoman Aintab (from the 1890s to the early 1920s), and then in Syria. They delivered several thousand babies in these two cities, and documented every birth in their notebooks. Utilizing the notebooks of the sisters as well as interviews with their neighbors and relatives as his source material, Dr. Mouradian examines in this lectures sixty years of community life, survival, and resilience during the twilight of the Ottoman Empire and the birth pangs of the Middle East.
